We have a required summer reading list for Middle School students. The language arts teachers will begin the 2008-2009 school year with a class discussion of the novel(s), and an assigned written response will serve as a baseline writing sample for each student. If your child has already read the designated selection(s), please have him/her read it (them) again. As students learn and grow they read with an expanded knowledge base and gain new insights into literature, and we want the novels to be fresh in their minds to respond appropriately in class. The list is as follows: students entering 6th grade are to read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech; students entering 7th grade are to read My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George and The Giver by Lois Lowry; and students entering 8th grade are to read two of the following:The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, Miracle Worker by William Gibson, and The Pigman by Paul Zindel. We hope you enjoy your summer and that reading is an active part of your vacation time.
